About the Campaign

The Many Faces of the Teacher is an advocacy campaign launched
by the Bato Balani Foundation Inc. aimed to extol the virtues of teaching
by providing role models who can inspire excellence. It recognizes
leaders in the teaching profession, examples of true heroes who can be
a source of inspiration and knowledge for their fellow teachers and
students.

It recognizes Filipino teachers who play a significant role in the life of a
student, nurture and mold the character of future leaders and heroes,
hence, becoming a force that shapes this nation. It upholds the leaders
who happen to be teachers, an inspiration to many not only with their
achievements but in the way they live their lives and dedicate
themselves to the vocation.

Bato Balani Foundation believes that by discovering these noble
educators and honoring them, it will make every Filipino aware of the
sublime nature and valuable contribution of the teacher to society
thereby encouraging every Filipino mentor to achieve excellence in teaching.

General Requirements

•    Actively teaching in private or public primary, elementary or secondary schools, colleges, and       universities
•    Outstanding performance in teaching
•    Has employed creativity, innovation, and resourcefulness in teaching
•    Impeccable values applied in teaching, family, and personal life
•    Respected in school and community and is a role model for students, colleagues, and family
•    With conviction, Christian morals, courage, and live a life of simplicity and humility
•    Active member of community and has engaged in socio-civic activities

Who are not Qualified to Join

•    School administrators including principals, assistant principals, supervisors, school presidents, vice       presidents, assistance vice presidents, chancellors, vice chancellors, school owners, and persons       holding non-teaching positions
•    Teachers who have previous or pending administrative, civil or criminal cases
•    Teachers who were prosecuted in any civil or criminal cases
•    Teachers who were suspended, reprimanded, or sanctioned for violation of any administrative policies

Criteria for Evaluation

•    Person of integrity and morality
•    In good relations with students, colleagues, community members, and family
•    Commitment and dedication to the teaching vocation
•    Strength of values/principles applied in teaching and personal life
•    Involvement in school and community activities

Search Process

Nomination

•  Partner organizations, school associations, religious organizations, Department of Education, and school heads, students, and teachers can nominate qualified teachers.

•  Nomination forms can be downloaded at www.diwa.ph

Submission of Nomination Forms

•  The nomination form and other requirements must be submitted to Bato Balani Foundation Inc, 6/F PDCP Bank Center, V.A. Rufino cor. Leviste Streets, Salcedo Village, 1227 Makati City.

•  Nominations may also be sent to bbfi@diwamail.com or tributetoteachers@diwamail.com

•  Deadline of submission of nomination forms is on June 10, 2006

Evaluation of Nominations by the Screening Committee

The Screening Committee evaluates the nomination forms based on the criteria and determine the short-listed nominees.

Validation and Interview / Establishment of Profile / Background Check

•  Short-listed nominees are contacted and an interview is scheduled.

•  The interview validates the qualification of the nominee and establishes his/her profile.

•  Based on the results of the interview and background check, the Screening Committee selects the finalists.

Selection of Honorees

•  From the finalists, the Board of Judges select four (4) honorees to represent this year’s The Many Faces of the Teacher.

HOW TO BE A HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEACHER 

BBFI's commitment to education development began with its How To
Be A Highly Effective Teacher project. This program provided BBFI
and its resource speakers and partner-organizations personal interaction
with private and public school teachers nationwide. Over the years, the
program has maintained its focus on training teachers in specific
teaching skills in the core subject areas of basic education.

Since 1991, BBFI has conducted over 500 seminars and has trained
more than 60,000 teachers in the program nationwide. In 2004,
BBFI conducted trained 6681 participants.



SOCIETY OF EDUCATORS FOR A BETTER PHILIPPINES

The Society of Educators for a Better Philippines (SEBP) is a program
aimed to inspire and cultivate the right values and attitudes among
educators. It also takes on advocacy positions in selected seminars
as may be demanded by current issues.

One of the major activities of SEBP for the year 2004 was the
organization of the Tribute To Teachers conference and Honorees.
Tribute to Teachers was participated in by more than 5000 teachers
and gave honor to four outstanding and inspiring teachers: "Wonder Worker" Dr. Milagros Ibe for her work in the field of Mathematics, "Coach" Dr. Maria Teresa Calderon for her work in the field of reading, "Explorer" Dr. Josette Biyo for her work in Science and "Stage Director" Dr. Onofre Pagsanghan for his work in performing arts.



TULONG SA PAARALAN, TULAY SA KAUNLARAN

Since its implementation in 1993, the TSP-TSK program has benefited more than 1,200 public schools nationwide, with a total of almost 69 million worth of donations spread across the duration of the program.

For year 2004, the foundation released P7,090,000.00 worth of book and educational magazines to Schools, Non-government organizations and Civil society organizations. The foundation also donated a P2.5M Multimedia Center to the Philippine Normal University as part of its effort to improve teacher education and enhance the use of Information Technology as a tool of teaching and learning.

Other significant activities include a book donation to the Museo Pambata's mobile library; Scholastic Enhancement Materials donation to the Commission on Filipinos Overseas to assist in bringing the knowledge of the Philippines and the Filipino culture to the Filipino children worldwide; educational materials to Kidzworld for various orphanages in the country.



SCHOLARSHIPS AND EDUCATIONAL SUBSIDIES

BBFI manages scholarship and educational subsidy programs for its corporate partners. The program offer different forms of assistance that may take the form of an outright cash subsidy to cover the scholar's tuition expenses. It may also be an outright scholarship in selected schools that the foundation has tied up with.

Some individuals and organizations that want to remain anonymous have also set up endowment funds for BBFI to manage. These funds have benefited scholars attending such schools as the Southridge Night School, which has 3 scholars.



QUALITY TEACHER

Quality Teacher (QT), a recipient of the Anvil Award for Best Professional Trade Journal from PRSP, is a quarterly magazine for specifically made for educators.  The magazine features a wide selection of articles tackling the various needs of the teacher. It features ideas that are not only aimed at helping teachers develop their professional competencies but also their personal lives. It is distributed nationwide to about 4,000 readers comprising of SEBP members, educators, administrators, and principals who also subscribe for their school libraries. It has also been distributed in the various seminars conducted by BBFI.

In 2004, BBFI decided to reformat QT to make it more relevant to the needs of the teachers of today. QT Vol 8 number 2 which tackled the quality of Philippine education received positive feedback from a lot of readers because of its well-researched articles and in-depth discussions of important issues affecting the state of the Philippine education system. Most of QT's articles serve as reference materials on various subjects especially about Philippine education.



ACTIVE CHESS CENTER OF ASIA INC.

The Active Chess Center of Asia aims to develop active chess as a spectator sport in the country and to cultivate new talents in the sport.

At present ACCA is working on the Chess in Schools program in partnership with the Grand Master Eugenio Torre Chess Institute (GETCI) to promote chess in schools.
